The week I thought would never end...

As my children age, I have a hard time changing my view of them. They will always be my children, my little girls. Brianne is now almost 15, and is reaching out for more freedom and responsibility. Freedom to spend time with her friends, out of eyesight and earshot of me. This transition, from 'Mommy's Little Big Girl' to teenager has been difficult for me. I don't like to think that in another 2 years she will have graduated from high school, and will be in college, wanting to move out and move on down her own path. It makes me want to stop and scream "WAIT!!! Who said you could grow up so fast?" Certainly not me. Although I love getting to the age when the children can actually tell you what they want, and what is wrong, I miss the baby stage. (One would think that is the reason my oldest and youngest are 12 years apart. One would be wrong...)

Somehow we have arrived at a time when Brianne is showing a responsibility to herself and to her parents, making good choices about who her friends are, and also making those good choices when she is out with those friends. So when Brianne asked if she could go to the Farmer's Market in Chico, with Gavin and to meet friends, two Thursday nights ago, I let her go; and asked her to bring home some fruit for Jocelyn's lunch. When Bri and Gavin returned she was all talk, telling me about the Market, what they had all had to eat while there, and the strawberries Gavin had purchased to dip in chocolate for her. She was sitting across the kitchen counter from me, talking away, while I was looking into her eyes. (I don't know if it is just being a mother of a teenager, working where I do, or a combination of both, but I was looking at her, watching her and listening to her, checking for any tears in the coat of responsibility she has been she has been sewing.) While looking into her blue/grey/hazel/complimentary-to-whatever-she-is-wearing eyes, I noticed her right pupil was much more dilated than the left. My first thought was 'here we go again'. (We had an episode of dizziness, headaches and nausea in January.) I told her what I was seeing, Gavin verified my observation, and her response was, "Don't say that! That's what happened when I had my vertigo!!!" I asked her how she had been feeling all day, she said she had been a little light headed, but it had been a hot day and she thought she might be dehydrated so she had been drinking a lot of water. (Now, mind you, a lot of water to her is a drop to me. She may drink 3 bottles of water while she is at school [on a good day] while I bring my 64oz mug to work and try to drink 3 of them in a 10 hour shift. Yes, it makes for a long 4 hours until a partner gets there to allow you a bathroom break!) We decided she would go to bed early and see how she was feeling in the morning.

Friday morning Brianne was still a little light headed, a little dizzy, but no headache or nausea, so I let her go to school. (With 3 AP classes, she really does not need to miss anything unless it is an emergency.) When she got home from school, she still had the same symptoms, and her pupil was a little better. (You may be wondering why I did not rush her to the emergency room as soon as I noticed the pupil on Thursday night, but like I said before, we had been through an episode like this in January, and Feather River Hospital assured me it was vertigo and migraines, pumped her full of anti nausea medication and morphine and sent her home. After sleeping for 36 hours straight, she was much better, and after a week was totally back to normal.) Brianne went to bed at a reasonable hour again, trying to let her body rest and fight of a possible migraine.

Saturday Brianne slept till almost 1:30pm. Now I would normally not let her sleep so late into the day, but knowing she was not feeling well, and possibly trying to get a migraine, I called Cam from work and asked him to let her sleep in. He is not a morning person, so he agreed to my request, probably wishing Jocelyn and Claire were not morning people like their mother... Anyway, I spent the morning researching possible causes, triggers and other symptoms of vertigo and migraines. Some things fit, others were totally off, I know, illness is never textbook. Such is my life... :-) Due to a miscommunication between Cam, Brianne and I, Brianne spent a short amount of time at the river with friends to celebrate Michael's birthday. She ended up having Gavin bring her home because she was not feeling well. (Too much sun when fighting a migraine is probably not a good idea.) They ended up at my Mom's house for the remainder of the afternoon. For dinner Saturday night, everyone was going to meet me at Asian Garden for Chinese food. (I talked with Brianne about being careful of foods that may trigger migraines, but she really wanted to have Chinese food for dinner.) She ate very well, if slowly, but was more dizzy after the meal. Gavin drove her home where we proceeded to watch a movie. After the movie, I read to Claire and Jocelyn and got myself ready for bed. Cam, Brianne and Gavin stayed up watching three episodes of The Closer.

Sunday, I just happened to be working with a partner, Jenny, who had worked as for the local ambulance company for many years. She advised me to have Brianne looked at by a doctor again. I called from work to check on Brianne and learned she was still fighting the headaches, dizziness and nausea. By the time I got home from work that evening, her speech was slower than usual, and she was having some difficulty coming up with words. All symptoms I had found listed for migraines, so I was not overly worried.

Monday the symptoms had not gotten any better, and Brianne was having a great deal of difficulty walking because of the vertigo. So, after taking Jocelyn to school, I returned home and called the advice nurse at Kaiser. She recommended I bring Brianne in to her Pediatrician as soon as possible. Well, since the nearest Kaiser is in Sacramento, my Mom and I had to drive 2 hours to get her there. Melissa met us at the Pediatrician's office at 11:30am with Cody, and Brianne's insurance card. We were only in with the doctor for maybe 5 minutes when Dr. Farghalli excused herself saying, "I'll be right back." When she returned, she advised us she had called for an ambulance to transport Brianne to the hospital. We were not allowed to transport her ourselves as she was not able to walk without assistance and the office was not able to release her for liability reasons. The ambulance was going to be an hour, so we were placed in a waiting room, a nurse plugged in Sleeping Beauty and we were given a snack of graham crackers and apple juice while we waited. (All of us except Brianne who was not allowed to eat or drink just in case the hospital wanted to run tests.)

The medics who arrived for the transport were very friendly, and Brianne was able to talk about food the whole way, almost convincing them to stop at Chili's for lunch
Brianne in the ambulance 082508
All Brianne could talk about was wanting a Classic Chili's Sirloin, cooked medium, with extra steak butter, loaded mashed potatoes and broccoli. After they dropped us off at the hospital, I think the medics were going to lunch.

By 1:30pm Brianne was all checked in at the hospital. Her spirits remained high throughout the dizziness and nausea, except when the headaches hit, and we waited...

Eventually a nurse came in to put in an IV.

After having 4 vials of blood drawn for testing, and waiting 6 hours, Brianne was starving. A nurse brought her a roast beef dinner with red potatoes and almost steamed vegetables.
Photobucket
Just as she finished her dinner, a nurse came to take her for an MRI. After removing all her jewelry and making sure her braces were not going to be pulled from her teeth, she was wheeled, Bryan and I in tow, to the MRI lab. Manuel, the technician, was very nice, explaining all that was going to happen, and making sure we all had ear plugs and Bryan and I had a place to sit in the room with Brianne. If you have never had a MRI, the machine is very noise, and depending on what they are looking for, can take some time. Brianne was in the machine for about 25 minutes, and fell asleep to the humming and vibration. After the test, she was wheeled back to the ER and asked for another dinner as the roast beef was not enough. Her second meal was BBQ chicken with mixed vegetables and rice. Brianne polished it off without looking back. An hour after the first MRI, another nurse came in and told us she was taking Brianne back to MRI. I asked her what happened to the first one. With a look of regret, like she did not want to tell us why there was a need for a second MRI. Bryan and I followed Bri's bed, once again, to the MRI lab. Manuel was able to explain the need for a second MRI. Brianne's braces were interfering with the picture and the radiologist wanted smaller slices to try to get a better picture. I sat in the MRI room with Brianne while Bryan stayed out in the technician's area to watch the images on the screen. After the second MRI, Brianne was wheeled back to the ER once again, to wait to hear from the doctors.

Were there going to let her go home like Feather River or were they going to keep her? While we waited, a male nurse names Sean came in to check Brianne's vitals. I know low blood pressure runs in our family, mine was 100/64 just the day before, but her 70/48 was a concern. Sean looked at Bri and told her the hospital would not let her go home until her blood pressure stayed over 90. Well let me tell you, after chatting with Sean for a couple of minutes (did I mention he was about 22 and spoke to Brianne instead of us parents?), Brianne's blood pressure returned to a healthy 92/58. She was starting to think she may get to go home; although her dizziness and headaches continued, her speech was returning to normal. She was wrong. The pediatrician chose to admit her into the hospital so they could run more tests and try to figure out what was wrong. Once the decision was made to keep her overnight, wouldn't you know it, we found out the pediatric section of the hospital was closed for remodeling. We were lucky though, the hospital decided to keep Brianne there instead of sending her to another Kaiser hospital in the Sacramento area. She was to be taken to the fourth floor and settled into a private room across from the nurses's station, because of her age. While the nurse was getting her ready to change floors, I ran out to Jack in the Box to get myself dinner, since I had not eaten all day, and to get Brianne her third dinner. She became known in the ER as the 'Skinny Girl Who Can Put Away Food'!

The Hazards of being the Supervisor

While we are packing and cleaning, cleaning and packing, to move everthing into the new house, we are also working on both houses depending on the day. My Mom and I have been working on completing the retaining walls in front of the old house, trying to get it ready to sell. (She has been coming over in the relative 'cool' of the mornings to put down as many blocks in the bottom row as the heat will allow, while I get ready for work.) Last week on one of my days off, Claire was out helping us with the wall. As the supervisor, she was visiting the east and west retaining walls, checking out the rest of the yard, and leaning on the wheelbarrow, depending on the flight of the bumble bees. Photobucket As a supervisor, she learned not to lean against the wheelbarrow when there is only one block left in it, especially when you are standing between the handles.

Photobucket

Even if she could have saved herself, the handle behind her knocked her back off balance and pushed her to the ground. 2 year old + road rash on the face = 1 screaming baby.

Look at this sad face...

And here is a new spider friend. I don't know what kind of spider it is, but I shoed it away so I could keep building the wall. Each section of its body was as big as my fingernail!

9th Anniversary (2 days ago)...and more...

Photobucket

I know, you would think I would be all over blogging about our 9th wedding anniversay. I have it written on all the calendars in the house, entered into the calendar in my phone, and entered into my email calendar at home and at work. But to be truthfull, we have had a so much on our plates lately. Getting all the last minute documentation in to the lender for the house, getting pictures to the insurance company, meeting with everyone, on top of making sure we have time with the girls and dinner ready at a reasonable time each night. I have been trying to take loads of belongings to the new house each time I have to go to Paradise. A box here, a box there, it all adds up.

We were supposed to sign the final papers on the new house on the 21st, but to escrow company was unable to get the paperwork to us in time.

We ended up signing the papers yesterday.

SO...Happy Anniversary Baby!!!!!!!!!

First Day of Second Grade!

Photobucket
Today was Jocelyn's first day of second grade in a new school. She was very excited this morning, and didn't have any problem getting ready in time to get Brianne to school. Then IT happened. We had pulled into a parking space at J's new school, eager to walk through the halls and locate the library, office, cafeteria, all the drinking fountains and bathrooms, and generally get a feel for the atmosphere of the school. As Jocelyn was closing her door, I reminded her to make sure it was locked (stock '93 Nissan trucks do not have automatic locks). J tried to stop the door just as it was closing and slammed her thumb in the door. (OUCH!!!) So much for her sunny outlook on the day! We made our way to the nurse's office for a band-aid and an ice pack. With a thumb wrapped in a disposable ice pack and brown paper towel, we wandered the halls. We located The Sunflower Classroom and went in to meet J's new teacher. J found a table of girls to sit with and got all settled in. She was a little down when I left, but all smiles by the time the school day was over. She was very happy to inform me that although she does not have any homework this first week, I do. I have to complete all the paperwork that comes with the beginning of a new school year. :\

................................

When I arrived at work this afternoon, I found this in my e-mail. It made me laugh, so I thought I would share it with everyone...(thanks again Rob!)

.................................

Although today is Tuesday, it is my work Friday. I have one day off then it's back to the radio for two days of OT before starting my regular week again. I knew it was coming, I traded Jeri two days a week and a half ago, for these two days. I needed to work on getting the flooring down in the new house, and she is busy moving her Mom this week. When you are prepared to work the OT, it's not a problem, until someone calls in sick for your only day off. I REALLY do not want to work 11 days in a row, so I left this note on the schedule...PhotobucketDo you think she will believe me? If I have to come in tomorrow, I will need a 72 hour detention for mental evaluation by the end of the 11 days. Hhmmmm, a guaranteed 3 days off....

Slow Motion...

Photobucket

Do you ever feel like your are moving in slow motion? Or like you are stuck in quicksand while the world rushes around you? I feel like I am in limbo. We are waiting for the new septic to be put in at the new house. (Most recent update is that it should be in by Friday, permits were supposed to be picked up today.) Once the septic is in, we should be able to close escrow within a week. I want to yell YIPPEE!!, but I feel like I am stuck. Time is dragging when it comes to getting into the place, but moving so quickly when it comes to going to work, getting ready for the Cancer Walk in San Francisco, getting ready for the girls birthdays these next three months. So much to do, and not enough time.

I would really love to get the new bedrooms painted before we move in, but I figure the house is large enough for us to camp out in other rooms while we paint the bedrooms. I still need to get the girls to Home Depot or Lowe's and let them look at paint colors. One of the officers at work has an airless sprayer he is going to lend us to get the painting done faster. No more rolling and brushing! (Thank you Will!)

Cam has been bringing boxes home from work every morning. We have been using them to pack up the rest of the house, and also sharing them with my Mom's neighbor Jerry, also with Jeri's (another co-worker) Mother. I am getting tired of having boxes everywhere in the house, but I have to be patient. It will be a couple of months before all the boxes are gone and everything is put away in the new house. My goal is to have everything set up, wiped down, put away, etc by the holidays. I would LOVE to have everyone over at our new house. A place to gather, to celebrate and to relax, together.

I have SO many projects I want to start right now, but really need to wait until we get into the house and settled. I have dresses I want to sew for Jocelyn; quilts I want to make for two special little girls; jams, jellies and butters I want to make to restock my shelves; photos to take, print, frame and hang; and SO much more...

Updates...

There is a local consignment shop we love to visit. It's called Jeannie's, and you never know what you might find there; original oil paintings, one of a kind furnishings, antique toys and jewelry, I have even purchased a trailer ball and extention for my van at this place. Anyway, this past week my Grandmother found a dining room table, complete with eight chairs and a leaf, that she thought would be a perfect housewarming gift. I went with my Mother and Grandmother to look at it on Tuesday. It will be a wonderful new addition to our new dining room. (Thanks Grandma!) (My old dining room table will be in the laundry room for now, to use for sorting and folding. It is a beautiful old table with claw feet, two drop ends, a leaf and actual gears underneath. It used to belong to a church and was given to me by an old co-worker of my Mom's.) While we are still waiting for the septic to be installed, we do not have permission to move anything into the new house yet. So....we had to store the new table in my Mom's garage. (Thanks Mom!)
We picked up the table and chairs yesterday, playing tetris with the pieces to get them all into the back of my little truck (with the tool box and lumber racks on), and my Mom's car. Gavin was a help in climbing in and around the furniture to place the blankets between and pieces that may rub together during the transport. (Thanks Gavin!)

....................................................................

It has been a couple of months, but I just came across this photo and thought I would share it. We had a report of a fawn that had been abandoned in a yard in town. The caller advised the fawn had been in the same place since the afternoon before and was possibly injured. It must have been later in the day, or a holiday as we did not have Animal Control on duty and had to send and officer to check out the situation. Per the Department of Fish and Game, if the animal is able to get on its feet, we are to leave it alone. However if the animal is unable to get up and has obvious injuries, officers are to dispatch the animal. What the officer found, was a very dehydrated fawn in need of some help, but no obvious injuries. The fawn was brought back to the police department while we tried to find a rescue center to take it in. After just a few phone calls we were able to located a rescue volunteer right here in town!

Andy...

It has come to my attention that I cannot blog about things of which I do not want my husband to know. (I say this jokingly as I could never hide anything from Cam.) You see, last week while we were working on the new house, trying desperately to finish the flooring by the deadline, Cam received a call from his buddy Andy. Photobucket It seems Andy keeps up with the blog, and wanted to know Cam's take on my idea of filling the spare rooms with children, and relegating the 'Man Room' to one of the outbuildings. It turns out that Cam does not always keep up with my blogging, and had no idea what Andy was talking about when he began the conversation with 'What's this about you not getting the Man Room?'

Although I love to see Cam keep in touch with old friends, I had to remind him of the deadline. (Andy, we made our deadline, Cam will be calling you to continue the conversation. Oh, and thanks for telling him about your new motorcycle. I received a call at work, and the first words out of Cam's mouth were "I bought a motorcycle.") Thanks Andy...Love ya! :)

House Update...

We are in escrow!
The roof inspection was completed last week. The house needs a new roof within the next 2-3 years. If we do it now, we can get the amazing deal of $5700 ($2300 less than I thought it would be)! The heating and air inspection was also last week. The air unit is industrial size and works wonderfully, although it does need a new thermostat. (It successfully froze Gavin during the night while he was watching the house for us.) The fire place needs a new block (?) but works, and the pellet stove is inoperable and to old to fix. I would have worried about how to heat the family room if my Mom's neighbor, Jerry, had not offered to give us his potbelly stove in exchange for boxes to pack his belongings for his move.
The septic inspection was also last week. The house needs a new septic. Am I ready to give up? NO! The seller has to fix the septic, so it will only mean we won't be able to move in as soon as we wanted.
The pest inspection was also supposed to be last week, but has not yet been completed.
The appraisal was yesterday morning. I am trying to be patient while waiting for the results. The appraisal is the only thing we have been waiting on to order the loan documents....

A Quote from Jocelyn

Mommy, you know how everything feels the same, unless it is something different?
